As I stood there watching them play the guitar, barbecue the food, do tricks on their skateboard…I felt it was so much part of their lives. They were in their element doing these. School, or the idea of studying academic subjects, on the other hand, was a strange concept.

And I was a stranger, because this is what I have been doing for so much of my life. And because this is what I am going to make them do.

I want to say that I felt united with them, that all humans have something in common. And we do, just that there are important differences to be recognised as well. To teach these kids, I need to change. I thought I was unorthodox in so many ways, now I think I need to be much more so.
